Photography Tip: Rule of Thirds | Ft. Jamie Chung
Hey there y'all! I just shot these fun photos of Jamie Chung last week and wanted to share a little photography tip on the rule of thirds! So, the rule of thirds is one of the most useful composition techniques in photography. It's an important concept to learn because it can be used in all types of photography. The rule of thirds helps produce images that are more engaging for your viewers and balanced better.
WHAT IS THE RULE OF THIRDS?
Mentally dividing up your image using 2 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines, shown in the image below. You position the important elements in your scene along those lines, or at the points where they meet. The idea is that an off-center composition is more pleasing to the eye, comparing it to one where the subject is right in the middle of the frame. Something I personally love about the rule of thirds, is that it encourages you to make creative use of negative space.
HOW TO USE THE RULE OF THIRDS
When framing a photo, imagine the scene divided up like the image of Jamie above. Think about what elements of the photo are most important, and try to position them at or near the lines and intersections of the grid. You may need to move around to get the best shot . Which forces you to think more carefully about the shot you're taking.*Some cameras have a setting which overlays a rule of thirds grid onto your photo* It's helpful to position people off to one side of the frame. This provides some "breathing space" that shows the subject's environment, and creates movement in your images. We are naturally drawn to people's eyes. Place them at one of the intersections on the grid to give the shot a clear focal point.
